The term Internet Scam or Internet Fraud - by Nazim Ansari

The term Internet Scam or Internet Fraud refers to any type of fraud scheme that uses one or more online services to conduct fraudulent activities. Internet fraud can take place on computer programs such as chat rooms, e-mail, message boards, or Web sites. In this post I will discuss about some of the commonly conducted scams and frauds across the Internet.

1. Phishing Scam

This is one of the most commonly used scam to steal bank logins and other types of passwords on the Internet. Phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging.

Example: You may receive an email which claims to have come from your bank/financial institution/online service provider that asks you to click a link and update your account information. When you click such a link it will take you to a fake page which exactly resembles the original ones. Here you’ll be asked to enter your personal details such as username and password. Once you enter your personal details they will be stolen away. Such an email is more than likely the type of Internet scam known as “phishing”. Phishing is said to be highly effective and has proved to have more success rate since most of the common people fail to identify the scam.

Most legitimate companies never request any kind of personal/sensitive information via email. So it is highly recommended that you DO NOT respond to such fraudulent emails. For more information on phishing visit my detailed post What is Phishing?

2. Nigerian Scams

This type of scam involves sending emails (spam) to people in bulk seeking their help to access large amount of money that is held up in a foreign bank account. This email claims that in return for the help you’ll be rewarded a percentage of the fund that involves in the transaction. Never respond to these emails since it’s none other than a scam.

In case if you respond to these emails you will be asked to deposit a small amount of money (say 1-2% of the whole fund) as an insurance or as an advance payment for the initialization of deal. However once you deposit the amount to the scammer’s account you’ll not get any further response from them and you lose your money. In fact “The large amount of money” never exists and the whole story is a trap for innocent people who are likely to become victims. The scammers use a variety of stories to explain why they need your help to access the funds. The following are some of the examples of them.

Examples:

· They may claim that political climate or legal issues preclude them from accessing funds in a foreign bank account

  • They may claim that the person is a minor and hence needs your help to access the funds
  • They may claim that your last name is the same as that of the deceased person who owned the account and suggest that you act as the Next of Kin of this person in order to gain access to the funds

3. Lottery Scams

This type of scam is similar to the one discussed above. In this type you may receive an email saying that you have won a large sum of money in online lottery scheme (ex. UK Lottery) even though you have not participated in any such schemes. The message claims that your email ID was selected randomly from a lagre pool of IDs. When you respond to such emails they initially ask for your complete name and address so that they can mail the cheque accross to you. After getting those details they may also send you an image of the cheque drawn in your name and address so as to confirm the deal. But in order to mail this cheque they demand a small amount of money as insurance/shipping charge/tax in return. However if you send the amount in hope to receive the cheque all you get is nothing. You’re just trapped in a wonderful scam scheme. Thats it.

4. Other General Scams and Frauds

The following are some of the other types of scams that you should be aware of.

In general, be aware of unsolicited emails that:

  1. Promise you money, jobs or prizes
  2. Ask you to provide sensitive personal information
  3. Ask you to follow a link to a website and log on to an account.
  4. Propose lucrative business deals

However it may seem to be a difficult task for novice Internet users to identify such online scams. Here are some of the common signs of such scam emails. By knowing them it may help you to stay away.

  • All these scam emails never address you by your name. In turn they commonly address you something like “Dear User” or “Dear Customer” etc. This is a clear indication that the email is a fraudulent one
  • When you observe the email header you may notice in the “TO:” Field that, the same email is forwarded to a large group of people or the “TO:” field appears blank. So this confirms that the email was not intended particularly for you. It was forwarded for a large group of people and you are one among them

I hope this post helps. Express your opinions through comments.

20 years of Sachin in Cricket - by Aakanksha Parashar

Now days most of cricket fans is talking about sachin tendular‘s 20 years in cricket. In 1989 he started his career against Pakistan and he was just 16 years old that time, in this age most of us were busy in our board exam, its just about the passion for dreams. Cricket was his passion and his passion made him a history maker, mile stone man in Cricket. He is amongst the most popular persons in India and one of the best cricket players in world. I am not a die hard fan of Sachin but spending 20 years in cricket and being a record breaker made him “God of Cricket” especially for Indians, his recent inning has shown he is still hungry for runs. He is not just a good cricketer he is very good human being (as per media) and this quality make him different from other players. I really love to see his wonderful game for next 20 more years.

He is the role model of many existing players and he will remain to be a role model for the future players also in fact its not about the sports persons only every one from us can get a lesson from this legend to achieve our goals.

Reading Habits Disappearing

As a nation we are watching(TV, Cinema etc.) more and reading/writing less.

I see this habits is further going down with new generation. New generation read magazines, joke books etc. but are not doing any significant book reading. As we are not reading much there are a few new good writers (I am not saying none here) in the current times. There used to be many good writers / poets in the earlier era and these are now replaced with journalists and critics.

A lot of good writers are writing more songs (like Javed Akhtar, Gulzar) and not books as all the readers have disappeared.

We come to know a lot about a history from the books written in those times, it is sad that we will not leave this treasure for our future generation.

Suggest all to build this habit …. Books are also very good friend/teacher as you learn a lot from and also reading is a very good way to utilize time (you can same time pass also)

Some steps to build book reading habit:

  • Visit book store regularly – you will see a lot of interesting things to read. There are books on all possible topics.
  • Start with light reading and topic of your choice e.g. study about great leaders. These books are generally very interesting.
  • Set your self a target – at least 10 pages daily and 20 pages on holidays.

Let you be the change in building a more informed and knowledgeable country.

Austerity-Political Drama

In economics, austerity is when a national government reduces its spending, to pay back creditors. Austerity is usually required when a government's fiscal deficit spending is felt to be unsustainable.

Going by the above definition of AUSTERITY, let us not call this populist gimmick by Political leaders as Austerity. I do not support, so called Austerity for the following reasons,

  1. As I believe Politics is a business, and like any business it’s nothing but marketing to get attention.
  2. If a VIP (Rahul Gandhi...etc..) travels by train or economy class along with a group of security team, they are causing a lot of inconvenience to a common man in the name of austerity.
  3. I do not know how much amount the Government will save in doing this (in my rough estimate it will not cross Rs.100 crores, if done by 100% ministers for 5 years). Thus this will have no impact on the government’s annual expenditure of more than Rs. 900 lacs crores. If leaders are really serious in reducing government spending and saving money, they can contribute by ensuring proper implementation of all government spending/projects without personal interest in Money, People and Place.

Char Dham Yatra (Part 1) - by Pankaj Sharma

Sorry guys for keeping you waiting. This post will come in parts.

Day 1 (8th July, 09): After lot of planning and discussions we got ready to test the claims made by the mobike companies. At 10.30 am in the morning I started off from Muradnagar in my Bajaj XCD 125 along with 6 friends for Chamba our first destination. Our arsenal also had bullet 350, Pulsar & Yamaha 200 cc. With our past experience we had carried with us 2 extra pairs of spark plug, tube and extra tool kit. Once we narrate the full story you would see how important it was to have these with us.

We touched Hardiwar at around 4pm. We just halted for half an hour to pray in Har Ki Pauri for a safe journey and continued our ride till Chamba via Rishikesh. With cramps building in our muscles already we went to bed early in a small hotel here.

Rishikesh

Day 2 (9th July, 09): Our mobile alarms went off at 5am in the morning and the glimpse of early morning sun made us all excited. Having a breakfast of bread and butter we started off for Dharasu from where we would reach our final destination Janki Chatti. The journey till Dharasu was very pleasant, sun playing hide & seek with beautifull landscape all around. After leaving Dharasu our luck went a bit wary. Rain started pouring in suddenly. Before we could reach Bahot a stone punctured my bike. The road was empty and no locality was in sight. Bittu was the lightest and the bravest person among us who decided to ride the bike by sitting on the tank. Finally after reaching Bahot I could repair the puncture and drove for Janki Chatti. Reaching there was reasonably easy as we did not face any major challenge. All were very tired and decided to end our day in a small hotel at 7pm in the evening. Janki Chatti would be our base camp for next 2 days.

Step farming on the way to Dharasu

Criticism of Media - by Aakanksha Parashar

Few days back I was watching a news channel most of the time they broadcast news about bollywood but that day there was shocking news, A woman kicked, assaulted, beaten to death. This incident was filmed on camera by media crews. Only media people were not there, there were 10 armed cops also, So now should we criticize the media. "Just why the hell were they shooting, why could they not have intervened? Is it ok to just watch and shoot, while someone is getting murdered! Why just for a story someone especially media person can watch this crime. Like others I posted a comment on a news channel website but when I started to think that how much of this criticism is justified? Then I got few points,

There were 10 armed cops and may be only 4-5 reporters. Why did the police not intervene? If reporters intervened may be villagers will get aggressive on them, may be they kept on shooting, hoping that the cops will manage to save the lady.

I think there is some sense in that argument, think what will u do if you find your self in such conditions, Its not about the cops or media its about us about our felling, daily we see or hear the case of road rages and how many of us intervene in that, only because of we are in hurry, we don’t, its easy to criticize on media or police but its hard to take the initiative and be the one to say no to something wrong and appose against this.

Long Live Internet !!!! - by Vijayta Jain

Yesterday the world had celebrated the 40th anniversary of internet. On Sept. 1, 1969, the first node was installed at UCLA in the the process of creation of ARPANET , the first mini-Internet between four western universities: UCLA, Stanford, University of California-Santa Barbara, and the University of Utah.

Vint , who as a graduate student at UCLA in the late 1960s helped build ARPANet and was later called the “Father of the Internet”. He was also credited with creating the TCP/IP which forms the basis of the entire Internet and allows the flow of information through the WWW.

See below what Vint Cerf has to say on Internet-

“First of all, I interpret (being labeled the “Father of the Internet”) as a misnomer, because there were thousands of people involved in the process,” Vint told several hundred students and faculty who came to hear him speak in Walk Auditorium. You know the old story about success has a thousand fathers and failure is an orphan. It’s true. “If you’re a researcher, I don’t think you can do a good job without the Internet,” said Vint. “It’s become an integral tool for collaborative work. I think if you talk to any serious scientist today and said, ‘If I took away your Internet, what would you do?’ the answer is always ‘a lot less effective research.’

My View-

Today, Internet is so big, so powerful and pointless that for some people it is a complete substitute for life” It has become an integral part of our lives. Have we ever thought , When was the last time we wrote a letter to our friends or when was the last time we brought a magazine to prepare a presentation . People rely on internet for knowledge(Oogle), latest news , minting money, weekend gateways, travel booking, paying bills, online marriages and divorce, e shopping…… and the list is endless . World is shrinking with the use of internet. While departing from our loved ones , we just ask one thing “ gtalk pe to hai na “ irrespective of the person traveling thousand mile far off.

Soembody said true that “The Internet is the most important single development in the history of human communication since the invention of call waiting.”

Time to untangle our past … and look forward - by Vijayta Jain

Why we are in the habit of carrying dead people on our shoulders. Does it actually matter to you , me or any Common man what Jinnah or Nehru said. It was their thinking, their thoughts which surely effected India 62 years ago. But, does it have any relevance to India in 21st Century. As a country we have a long list of doable things on which media can debate about. I had a strong feeling that media plays a tremendous role in a democratic country like India. Look at, china where the government directs what to publish and what to hide from the entire world. Lakhs of Chinese students were mercilessly killed and media was not allowed to say a word. If media industry in India has the power then they have to be equally responsible to what they are showing or writing.

It’s a state of sorry that today we cannot even watch news channels with our younger generation. One can see a review on “Rakhi ka swamwar, sach ka saamne ” and all non stop non sense serials. Does it give any value addition to any segment of society? If I take a trip down to memory lane , As a kid I enjoyed TV by watching evergreen serials like Dekh bhai dekh, bhomkesh bakshi, zabaan sambhal ke, mahabharat, ramayan, chitrahar or superhit muqabla (weekly) and 1 Friday block buster movie. Since childhood we were taught to listen to news everyday, but can we pass on the same teachings to our next generation. Today, to what level have to be selective, I guess we just shuffle between 3-4 channels out of hundreds.

These so called high paying intellectuals in media industry are lacking ideas in a country like India, which is full of diversity in traditions, culture, people. Today, media has become the easily available platform for a person who seeks fast publicity.

It’s a high time for media to act responsibly because they are impacting the Indian society and country’s future.

Jinnah - Sardar Patel - Jaswant Singh - BJP - My views

I feel - a book is a book - we may agree with the authors point of view or disagree. If we disagree we should share reason of disagreement. I have not see any facts coming out of BJP in this case against the point of view of Jaswant Singh - that shows the lack of intellect in BJP.

I am a great fan of Ghandhi - that does not mean that he has never done/said anything wrong. I may also disagree with some of his views / actions. After-all, he was also an human being and can make mistakes.

Saying Jinnah has never done anything good or all his view were wrong is totally wrong. If somebody praises something good about him, we should welcome that in that context. Same is true about Sardar Patel or any other leader / person.

If an organization take away the power of speech from its people - nobody can save them. I wish BJP takes corrective action immediately and allow its member to maintain and individuality also. They may claim in the media that these are not party views - and that it.

Shahrukh Khan at Newwark Airport

I think there is nothing wrong in the reaction of Shahrukh Khan to what happened to him at the Newark Airport. This is what is expected from him - if he would not have reacted like this, that is unlike him. This is very natural of him.

I being a Sikh and from Asia have gone through this during all my visits to US / Europe. The customer officers see us differently and it is very normal of them to go through another round of checking. I do not blame them at all for this.

They(US) do not invite us - we choose to go there - so we need to follow their processes. By such reaction we are only doing bad to our image. If US feel that their is particual religion / country which they need to be cautious of they have every right to perform all security checks - and they have been very clear about that for last 6-7 years. If we feel we do not agree with their approach - let us not go USA.

I cannot believe that a regular visitor like Shahrukh Khan is not aware / heard of these process of US custom and passport control office.

I would strongly recommend Indian Custom and Passport control office to follow such practices.

If a celebrity has done done any act of terrorism till date, this does not mean that no celebrity would perform such act in future also.

So when it comes to national security ------ ALL ARE EQUAL.

My first trip to South India - by Vijayta Jain

Since a long time I was planning to put my thoughts into words for this forum. But, don't know where I was busy. Surely not in the office:). All my way back to home, I was deeply thinking where to start from. The dilemma is from where to start rather than what to start.

Everyone's heart is filled with lot of cherish memories but mine is pretty fresh because I just left my spinsterhood :) I could gather each and every moment of summer of '07 when I joined my first job. As a fresh graduate I was eagerly waiting for my joining letter. My eagerness was not about to know my take home or to know allowances or to know the joining date. My only concern was my joining location. I was flexible enough to accept any location except Chennai. I had all reasons to stay in delhi , die hard fan of pune, happening life of bangalore and Hyderabad could prove to be a career jackpot.

But life is never the bed of roses.I didn't wish to go to Chennai, so I was the only one from my college to join the Chennai center. Goddamn it, It was the shock of my life. I took hours to digest... me ... Why only me...... May be because they came to know the secret that I love south Indian food. Friends gave me all fundas to console me by saying you got the best technology or all R&D happens in this center or may be you will get on site soon. Ya, I was directly posted to onsite... just next to Sri Lanka. But, sooner or later I have to face the music so, I was mentally prepared to stay there for next 2 years and choose the biggest suitcase(almost immovable) and all set to go.

The minute I landed the station I could find nothing fishy about that fish smell. I said to myself.... "Welcome to chennai". The first things I remember about chennai is the autowalas.... They all are rajnikants in their own way. A number plate can be missing on their autos but a rajnikant's poster will not be. They have there own rates, speed, traffic rules and you are obliging them by seating in their autos. Even I also learned to deal with them before reaching chennai. "What anna .... u think m new........ T-nagar near na anna.... working IT 6 years chennai... only 100Rs". Don't dare use verb, adverb ,only keywords and hand movements. The minute you argue with them they can blame you for tearing their seat covers.

I could smell the fragrance of that white and orange flowers in every street of chennai. Its a ritual that all males bring flowers to their wives while returning back from office (how filmi). You can get the best filter coffee even on a small hawker. That is the bestest coffee one can ever experience. I felt relived by all the troubles loaded by this city when I walk along the Marina beach and watching sunset and sunrise from the beach is a fascinating experience. My all time favourite was Murugun Idli(may be equivalent to haldiram or bikaner here). This shop was always overcrowded serving coffee and pure ghee dosas and idli on banana leaf. I became expert in eating by covering palm and hands together. I really appreciate this city for preserving and nurturing their culture and traditions so tactfully.People are pretty professional and polite in these cities. There are smart enough people like Kishore Biyani who got inspired by Sarvana store of Chennai and launched Big Bazar.

There is so much to see and experience in South India. Be it Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Kodai, Madurai or Rameshwaram. I was fortunate enough to discover all because I am a travel bug who who likes to travel & feels "at home" all over the world !!!. I just believe one should shop, eat and enjoy in the cities commonest places to enjoy the heart of the city. Chennai is a fantablous place and there are innumerable positive aspects to watch out rather than crip about the weather, sambar, idli or language difference.

You Can Help Fight Global Warming - by Amit Kataria

Many efforts are being made by various nations to cut down the rate of global warming. One such effort is the Kyoto agreement that has been made between various nations to reduce the emissions of various green house gases. Also many non profit organizations are working for the cause. Al Gore was one of the foremost U.S. politicians to heave an alarm about the hazards of global warming. He has produced a significantly acclaimed documentary movie called "An Inconvenient Truth, ‘Must Watch’ " and written a book that archives his advice that Earth is dashing toward an immensely warmer future. Al Gore, the former vice president of United States has given various speeches to raise an awareness of global warming. He has warned people about the ill effects of Global warming and its remedies.

But an interesting side of the global warming episode is that there are people who do not consider global warming as something that is creating a problem. Skeptics of global warming think that global warming is not an ecological trouble. According to the global warming skeptics, the recent enhancement in the earth's average temperature is no reason for alarm. According to them earth's coastlines and polar ice caps are not at a risk of vanishing. Global warming skeptics consider that the weather models used to establish global warming and to forecast its impacts are distorted. According to the models, if calculations are made the last few decades must have been much worse as compared to actually happened to be. Most of the global warming skeptics believe that the global warming is not actually occurring. They stress on the fact the climatic conditions vary because of volcanism, the obliquity cycle, changes in solar output, and internal variability. Also the warming can be due to the variation in cloud cover, which in turn is responsible for the temperatures on the earth. The variations are also a result of cosmic ray flux that is modulated by the solar magnetic cycles.

Note:- This article is from www.globalwarming.org.in

I will continue to write on this TOPIC.....

Life!!

Life's like having a cup of tea. You sit by the window, lift the cup and take a careless sip only to realize that you got no sugar. Too lazy to go for it, you some how struggle through the sugarless cup till you discover un-dissolved sugar crystals lying at the bottom. That is LIFE! All the sweetness is there, all you need to do is stir it up a little.

Coping With Stress

Stress is an issue and can result in serious illnesses. What can you do about it?
Here's what you can to do about it

Identify
One of the top things to do in coping with stress is to identify the cause of your stress. Is it a word, action, thought, person, condition, food, relationship? Identify the source and you're halfway finished. Once a cause is identified the stress may often disappear.

Get used to it
People try earnestly to get away from what causes the stresses in their life. Why? These are the causes of it so why get away from them? They may well be the answers to removing the stress in your life or at least you might end up with ways to escape the stressful conditions.

Then adapt yourself by offering a different response to it. By adapting to stressful things once in awhile you will gain confidence that you are in control of your life, which is an important step in helping cope with stress.

Feelings buried alive never die. So bottling up your stress responses is not going to make matters any better. Remember how good it felt to tell someone you love and trust what's going on? It is only natural for us to keep our problems inside, but you may be able to benefit from the practical suggestions of a friend as well as bring yourself emotional relief.

Finding Balance
Where is balance in coping with stress? We have to find it. Even too much of sweet stress can cause more stress in your life, so it is very important to go find balance in your life.

Take a few moments to relieve stress of work. Stretching or walking around the room, can relieve tension in your muscles and joints.

Make certain that your lifeline is not dominated by any one thing. Keep track of yourself and your reactions. Make sure you make time for relaxation -- things you enjoy doing need to be done. Do you have a hobby that you enjoy that you haven't been to in a while? It might be time to get back to it.

Do write your comments on What else could you do to cope with your stressful life?

The Power of Positive Thinking - by Nirbhay Shekhar

The Power of Positive Thinking:

Positive thinking is a mental attitude that admits into the mind thoughts, words and images that are conductive to growth, expansion and success. It is a mental attitude that expects good and favorable results. A positive mind anticipates happiness, joy, health and a successful outcome of every situation and action. Whatever the mind expects, it finds.

How to turn the mind toward the positive:

Always visualize only favorable and beneficial situations. Use positive words in your inner dialogues or when talking with others. Smile a little more, as this helps to think positively. Disregard any feelings of laziness or a desire to quit. If you persevere, you will transform the way your mind thinks.

Once a negative thought enters your mind, you have to be aware of it and endeavor to replace it with a constructive one. The negative thought will try again to enter your mind, and then you have to replace it again with a positive one. It is as if there are two pictures in front of you, and you choose to look at one of them and disregard the other. Persistence will eventually teach your mind to think positively and ignore negative thoughts.

In case you feel any inner resistance when replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, do not give up, but keep looking only at the beneficial, good and happy thoughts in your mind.

It does not matter what your circumstances are at the present moment. Think positively, expect only favorable results and situations, and circumstances will change accordingly. It may take some time for the changes to take place, but eventually they do.

Communication - Interaction - Personality Development

Dear All,

I would like all of you to read what information you get on Johari Windows on the net. I had an opportunity to go through this around 15 years back and this has impacted me significantly.

I am putting below a summary of the concept, but would encourage all of you to read more about this and discuss among each other.

The basic of this concept are as below:
  1. That individuals can build trust between themselves by disclosing information about themselves; and
  2. That they can learn about themselves and come to terms with personal issues with the help of feedback from others.

The four quadrants of human personality / interactions are:

Quadrant 1: Open Area

What is known by the person about him/herself and is also known by others.

Quadrant 2: Blind Area, or "Blind Spot"

What is unknown by the person about him/herself but which others know. This can be simple information, or can involve deep issues (for example, feelings of inadequacy, incompetence, unworthiness, rejection) which are difficult for individuals to face directly, and yet can be seen by others.

Quadrant 3: Hidden or Avoided Area

What the person knows about him/herself that others do not.

Quadrant 4: Unknown Area

What is unknown by the person about him/herself and is also unknown by others.

In summary you can significantly improve your interaction if "OPEN AREA" is the largest area in the four quadrants.

I am sure this will be useful and is you are able to implement this well in your daily life, it will significantly improve your interaction with family, friend and all.

India's Civilized Past - by Amit Tyagi

It is the only society in the world which has never known slavery.

India never invaded any country in her last 10,000 years of history.

India was the richest country on Earth until the time of the British in the early 17th Century

Robert Clive’s personal wealth amassed from the blunder of Bengal during 1750’s was estimated at around £401,102

It has been estimated that the total amount of treasure that the British looted from India had already reached £1,000,000,000 (£1Billion) by 1901.

Taking into consideration interest rates and inflation

this would be worth close to $1,000,000,000,000

($1Trillion) in real-terms today.

Some interesting facts about Solar Eclipse - 22 Jul 2009

The longest total solar eclipse of this century taken place on 22-Jul-09, reaching a maximum 6min 39sec duration and following a track about 15,150km (9,410 miles) long, around half the globe, beginning in western India, crossing Bangladesh, central China and ending in theSouth Pacific.

Apart from being astonishing sights, solar eclipses also have led to discoveries about the sun, especially its outer atmosphere, the corona, which is normally hidden.

But one of the most remarkable studies was made on an eclipse 90 years ago to test Einstein’s theory of relativity. The British astronomer Arthur Eddington went to the island of Principe, off the west coast of Africa, to photograph the stars revealed near the sun during an eclipse. According to relativity, as the beams of starlight passed near the sun they would be slightly deflected by itsgravitational field. The day of the eclipse on May 28, 1919, began with a thunderstorm, and heavy clouds covered the sky. But by the time of the eclipse in the afternoon, the clouds began to part, although they still blotted out much of the sight. Only with seconds of the eclipse remaining did the sky clear enough for Eddington to take good photographs. They proved the theory of relativity correct and made Einstein world-famous.
